Since 1711 Taga Sake Company has been brewing sake in the sleepy town of Taga, near the famous castle town of Hikone in eastern Shiga Prefecture, under the protection of the god of life enshrined in Taga-taisha Shrine. This is also one of the most fertile areas of Japan. Lake Biwa, Japan’s largest, holds fresh and pristine water from the surrounding mountains – the surface water gives life to the rice, and the ground water gives life to our sake. Filtered through the limestone of the northern Suzuka Mountain range, our sake water is a uniquely hard water in Shiga Prefecture. With a hardness of 136ppm and rich in minerals it is ideal for sake production, giving birth to our unique Taga Sake. However, we know it’s important to give credit where due, which is why we revere and respect this perfect sake-brewing environment. We make utmost efforts to control and reduce our environmental impact, and we also give our sake to the local farmers who provide us with rice as thanks for their efforts. Commended with Gold in the Annual Japan Sake Awards 13 times, this sake is the work of nature, skill and generations of experience. We sincerely hope that it brings you as much joy to drink it, as it has for us to make it.
